Mc Fisher is a simple yet classic locale in La Paz, Baja California Sur where the highest quality fish and seafood are served for your pleasure.  Starting out as a taco stand on the corners of Ocampo and Reforma in 1999, Mc Fisher served only three items: clam, fish and breaded shrimp tacos. Their delicious street quickly gained local fame and its success urged its owners, the Macklis Fisher family, to establish a permanent locale. The family are Baja natives and take pride in being the first of the region’s settlers who were a mixture of Scottish and Pericú, an indigenous people of Baja.

The Mc Fisher team uses ancestral techniques of fishermen and the Pericú to conserve and cook certain types of fish and seafood. For example, they serve a dish called Caguamanta, a stingray soup with a dash of red wine, that comes from a 100% baja recipe. They also serve  ground ray, crab and fish.

In the kitchen at Mc Fisher they only use fresh ingredients, brought in daily from local markets. Their fish and seafood are sourced from sustainable and responsible fishermen. They do not sell at-risk species and always respect regulations to protect the survival of marine life.

What to eat?

Their menu is very ample: they have tacos, tostadas, cocktails, quesadillas, empanadas, soup, burritos, fish, shrimp and even hamburgers.

Their fish taco is legendary, especially after being featured in the famous Netflix series, The Taco Chronicles. Keep exploring their menu and you will find their delicious octopus al ajillo taco. Its recipe is simple, consisting only of octopus, guajillo chile, olive oil and onion. But believe me, this taco is unforgettable. Its flavor, texture and spiciness are perfect. One more taco not to miss is the scallop and onion taco. I still sigh when I think about it.

The maya burrito was actually a customer’s invention that so many people fell in love wit that they decided to include it permanently on the menu. A whole jalapeño stuffed with grilled cheese is wrapped in a flour tortilla with beans and smoked marlin, which can be substituted with shrimp.

Aguachile is one of my favorite all-time dishes. Everyday of my stay in La Paz i searched for the perfect one, and finally found it at McFisher. I loved its thick salsa that balances chile and cilantro perfectly. It also has the right amount of heat to provide a pleasant but spicy experience. Its secret is that it is all made to order. The lime juice is freshly squeezed, the cucumber and onion sliced at the moment, as well as the freshly ground salsa, all help to ensure no texture or flavor is lost. Its freshness is felt in every bite.

Drinks?

Do not miss out on their half liter margaritas. The waiter comes by with a bottle of tequila to top  your drink off to your liking. Their micheladas and aguas frescas will surprise you with their flavor and freshness.

The service at Mc Fisher is impeccable, their objective being to leave you happy and satisfied so that you pass on the recommendation to your friends and family upon their next visit to La Paz.
